New flats in the conservation area of Bakewell |
|
- Client : Peak Rural Housing Association
- Budget : £650,000
- The site for the flats in Bakewell was an area of land "left over" from the planned new ACF building for the East Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association. Partner in charge Allan Joyce introduced the idea of getting a housing association on board and Peak Rural became a part of the project.
- The Association confirmed the local need for housing for the over 55's, as the site is easily accessible to the town centre of Bakewell. The six 2 bed flats share a communal garden and landscaped parking area.
- The practice worked very closely with the Peak District National Park Planning Authority to establish a form and layout which would harmonise with local buildings and complement the conservation area. The flats are built of natural stone sourced from three local quarries, and project architect Mike Harrison had to draw every aspect of the development at large scale to ensure the project was in keeping with the conservation area.
- The development as a whole has received critical acclaim from Rural Affairs Minister Jim Knight and has recently won a CPRE award.
