Flora Barn : barn conversion with contemporary extension |
- Client : Private
- Flora barn was semi-derelict when AJA were given a brief to refurbish and extend it to create a home for a family with four children. It is in a conservation area in a Trent valley village. Surrounding new houses and extensions tend to be built as copies of the local red brick and pantile vernacular, but architect Clive Hewitt successfully gained planning permission for a stunning extension to Flora Barn which is clad in cedar boarding with a stainless steel roof. The extension emulates the form of a dutch barn, of which there are many examples locally. Internally the house is open plan with a glazed link between the old and the new and has a curved bridge above the kitchen which enables all members of the family to participate in the life of the new home.
