Bill Baker Court, Sutton on Sea |

- Client : Anchor Trust Housing Association
- Budget : £35,000
- AJA were the architects and interior designers for Bill Baker Court, a 2 storey residential scheme in Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire. The local area houses an elderly population and encapsulates the notion of “retirement by the sea”. East Lindsey District Council were therefore extremely supportive of a scheme which gave support and housing to the frail elderly, and they designated a site in the town not far from the beach huts which line the sandy beach overlooking the north sea..
- Anchor Trust, in the meantime, had begun to take a fresh look at how they could provide housing for the frail elderly and gave the architects a brief which focussed on the communal aspects of the project. Their requirement was for an atrium type entrance area and reception, providing a light, airy focal point to the scheme off which rooms could be accessed providing such activities as hairdressing, a gym, an internet room and café. The central space is top lit and provides lounge areas at ground and first floor. From this central area the four corridors of flats were entered at both levels.
- The scheme was so innovative that Anchor Trust commissioned AJA to produce a “fly through” which they displayed at the Harrogate Housing Conference. An image from the fly through is shown as is the finished item.
- As interior designer, Louisa Mackley worked closely with director in charge, Tricia Akers to fit out the scheme. She designed floor, wall and ceiling finishes for all the communal rooms and flat bathrooms, as well as fitted furniture where required. Lighting design, wall hangings and loose furniture were also included. Louisa ordered and installed all the items, covering everything from chairs, sofas and tables down to tea towels and cutlery for the kitchen.
