Christian community centre at grade 2 St Stephens church |
- Client : St Stephens PCC
- Budget : £2m
- Following the violent inner city riots in the 1980's, the then vicar of St Stephens, a grade 2 listed building in Hyson Green, Nottingham, conceived the idea of building a new community centre adjacent to the existing church. The church sat within extensive grounds which also housed a vicarage and an old hall. The architects reviewed various options for the site, culminating in the decision to demolish the vicarage and hall. Models were made of the proposed development in order to explain the scheme to local people and to help raise funds for the project.
- The architects worked very closely with the PCC who formed a building committee to manage the briefing and procurement of the project. AJA exhibited all their "hand holding" skills to help everyone involved understand what was going on; there were public meetings, design days and models and drawings used to demonstrate what was being proposed.
- Phases 1 and 2 of the development were built, namely 20 houses let locally to people in need, and a community centre, linked to the church which houses a drop in centre, kitchen and cafe, large sports hall and smaller, multi-purpose rooms used for a variety of purposes. The project was launched by the Queen and Prince Philip.
