New Surestart Childrens Centre in Bilborough

  • Client : Nottingham City Council
  • Budget : £600,000
  • The new Centre was funded by GOEM and Nottingham City Council as part of the Surestart programme, and has just been commended in the RICS Community Benefit awards. AJA are working on 2 other similar centres in Nottingham with the City Council.
  • The Centre is a new build extension to an existing school foundation unit which provides space for 0-3 year olds. Local residents were asked which facilities they would like to see in the new building and they responded with requests for extra daycare, training facilities and a health room. It sits behind the main school and provides a street frontage to the entrance road.
  • The design is based around an oversailing canopy and is constructed on a grid of columns, allowing the roof to be completed early on. Work underneath to the timber frame could therefore be completed in dry conditions. The building has lots of natural light encouraging low energy usage and the shell exceeds Building Regulations for thermal performance. There is also a heat recovery system in place.
  • Internally the layout encourages users to quickly and easily find their way round by having a "street" like foyer from which all the other uses are reached. The "street" also leads to the existing school so that younger children can integrate with their older brothers and sisters.
