Refurbished accommodation for the homeless |
- Client : Guinness Trust Housing Association
- Budget : £750,000
- Parklands is a development of 21 flats for single people which have been created out of the ruins of an old school in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. The practice carried out a feasibility study on behalf of Guinness Trust to assess the suitability and potential of the site for redevelopment. On the basis of the study, the Trust bought the old school premises which had by now become derelict, from Derbyshire County Council on the open market.
- The renovated building provides flats around a sunny, landscaped courtyard which are now occupied by both young and old, single people and is within easy walking distance of the town centre. The units are designed to be studio type flats which have living accommodation at ground floor and a mezzanine bedroom above with a gallery overlooking the living room. Director in charge Tricia Akers points out that this has allowed the original, tall school window openings, which face onto the main road, to be left intact and gives a feeling of airiness and space inside.
