New houseboat on the Thames embankment
Existing houseboat on the Thames
  • Client : private
  • The clients already owned a site on the Thames and lived on a houseboat moored there. They met Allan Joyce Architects at one of the National Homebuilding and Renovating shows and briefed the practice to design a dwelling on the site. AJA started discussions with the local Planning Authority, but together with the clients, realised that the chances of an approval seemed unlikely.
  • The clients then decided to commission the practice to design a new purpose built 4 bedroom houseboat, realising that they enjoyed living on a boat and had the benefit of the site as a garden.
  • Planning permission is not needed for the new houseboat but Building Regulation approval is, so Project Director Clive Hewitt is in the process of doing the detailed drawings to achieve this. The design of the new houseboat is as shown. The steel hull is being designed by a naval architect and the clients are hoping to have it made in the UK. A structural engineer has also just been appointed.
