New conservation and discovery centre at Clumber Park
Clumber Park existing brewhouse
  • Client : The National Trust
  • Budget : £1.1m
  • Allan Joyce Architects were invited to be interviewed by the National Trust who were looking for a practice to design a new conservation and discovery centre in the old brewhouse at Clumber Park. Project director Clive Hewitt and director Allan Joyce presented their proposed scheme at the interview and AJA were subsequently appointed to undertake the commission.
  • The brewhouse is currently semi derelict. The exciting proposal inserts a new freestanding oval shaped mezzanine floor into the space which will be supported on a tree-like structure. Access to the new centre will be via a diagonal entrance off the courtyard shown above, and it will give a larger area for exhibition space and house a new discovery centre for children, a facility which is currently housed in a shed elsewhere in the park. The roof to the entrance will be glazed, as The Trust believe that access to the brewhouse would originally have been open and without a roof.
  • Allan Joyce Architects are hoping to submit a planning application by the end of July, followed by a submission to the Lottery for Heritage Lottery Funding by September. They have already made models to explain the scheme and will be using these and drawings as part of their submission.
