Three Spires : frail elderly housing in Southwell
Three Spires
  • Client : Anchor Trust Housing Association
  • Budget : £3.5m
  • Anchor Trust were very keen to develop a site in Southwell, Nottinghamshire for the frail elderly, as care premises previously run by the Council were under threat of closure.  Finding a site proved to be problematic due to high land costs in the rural market town. AJA carried out several feasibility studies on different sites in the area before the Association and Newark and Sherwood District Council agreed to the development being on land on the outskirts of the town which was only available for a Housing Association type development.
  • The site was relatively small and therefore to accommodate 40 flats and a respite care facility, the building had to be three storey. Southwell is also a conservation area and so local interest was high. The chosen design had to undergo the rigours of several presentation meetings to the local interested parties as well as to the District Council.
  • To enable the funding to stack up, four of the flats were sold.  The development now provides superb, managed homes for all of its residents within easy walking distance of the town centre.
