Cherry Trees Client: Nottingham City Council Budget: £3.7m Summary: The rebuilding of Cherry Trees Care Home, to provide a 45-bedroom dementia care facility for the over-55's. Description: Our client had a clear vision for producing a flagship care facility for people suffering from demntia; providing quality bedrooms and en-suite facilities for individuals and couples. The care home also includes a day centre, cafe and hairdressing studio, alongside colour-coded residential wings to improve way-finding and recollection, and a snoozelum for multi-sensory therapy. The plan of the building was designed to provide smaller groups of ten bedrooms, each with their own lounge/dining areas and with larger central multi-use spaces to encourage social and physical activities. The three-wing structure encloses a large outdoor amenity space, where residents are encouraged to be actively incolved in the upkeep of the gardens. The building form and materials had to strike a balance between the familiarity and non-institutional feel of traditional construction with large areas of glazing, open-plan areas and the high-technology required by modern care facilities. The building benefits through underfloor heating powered by ground source heat pumps and hot water through solar hot water panels. The building work commenced in March 2009 and was completed in March 2010, with residents moving into the home in May. |
